Meenakshi Temple: A True Spiritual Marvel

The Meenakshi Temple beauty of  Tamil Nadu spreads over 14 acre with full of art, architecture, and history. This temple doesn't need any kind of introduction because it  has its own significance. We have seen this temple many times in our life without going there, yes you are correct we have seen this temple in the south movies.

The temple displays  splendid architecture having 14 towers, each tower displays thousand of stories and sculpture. There are an estimated 33000 sculpture and a massive Nataraja Sculpture which is enclosed in huge silver altar. The hall of Meenakshi temple temple contains 985 uniquely carved pillars and each pillars stunningly produce different melodious sound when struck.


 

It is located on the south bank of Vaigai river. The temple is at the center of the ancient temple city of Madurai mentioned in the Tamil Sangam literature. The temple signifies the important of women in families. It is the wonderful mix of Legends, Myths ,and different architectural technique. The west tower (gopuram) of the temple is the model based on which the Tamil Nadu State Emblem is designed.  The temple is a major pilgrimage destination within the Shaivism tradition, dedicated to Meenakshi Devi and Shiva. However, the temple includes Vishnu in many narratives, sculptures and rituals as he is considered to be Meenakshi's brother. The entire structure, when        viewed from above, represents a mandala.

Mythological Facts

  • It believes that lord Shiva came in the form of Sundareswaran to Meenakshi, an incarnation of Goddess Parvati. Their wedding is believe to be the biggest event on earth with millions of people, Gods, and Goddesses coming down to Madurai to bless them. Their weeding is celebrated for 12 days annually between April 15 to May 15, starting from flag hosting , Meenakshi coronation, her wedding end  with their  Ther Thiruvizha- procession of Meenakshi and Sundareswaran in a temple car.
