Konark: The Sun Temple
Konark temple is one of the best scientific architecture of India. It is located in Puri (Orrisa) dedicated to lord Surya. KON +ARK (KON=Angle or edge , Ark= Sun). It was added as UNESCO world heritage site in 1984. It is also known as Kala pagoda due to is dark color.
It is 750 years old construction build by king of Ganga dynasty Raja Narshimadev -I in 1250 CE. The structure of this temple is like Rath consist of 12 pairs of tire. Total 1200 craftsmen were continuously working for 12 years but they couldn't complete the construction of temple, then the Dhrupad, son of chief craftsmen complete the construction of temple. After the completion of the construction, Dhrupad commits suicide by jumping into Chandrabhaga river
One of the scientific thing about it is tire shows time according to sun direction that's why its tier also known as Dhupghadi.

There is a Statues on the entrance of temple gate which depict the philosophical theory that pride/ego and wealth destroyed the human life (LION= Pride/Ego, Elephant = Wealth).

Interesting Facts
- Iron sheets and magnet were used to join the stones together.
- 52 tons of magnet placed on the top of the main temple where the idol of lord Surya stay in the air. This magnet was removed by Portuguese because they find difficulties in navigation and sailing.
- The Chandrabhaga river which flows 2 km north of the temple, which has now become distinct.
- This temple has been constructed in such a way that the first ray of the sun falls on the entrance gate of temple.
- The seven horses built in the temple is the sign of seven days of the week.
